My best guess would be that this is really less about oil than about "making an example" out of an Arab dictator-leader, and proving that we can do it using a small fraction of our military strength. From a foreign policy standpoint there is probably the hope that this will keep other guys over there in line, or at least keep their people in line lest they have an Al-Queda like group operation with impunity in their country.
