June 01, 2003Funny Thought on FilesharingDo people who think napster, bittorrent, etc are wrong also think that gun control is a good thing? After all, bittorrent doesn't pirate movies, movie pirates do. Posted by reid at June 1, 2003 09:28 PM | TrackBackComments
well, i guess you could relate this to selling drug paraphernalia.. in the sense that they know what you will use it for, but technically, you agree not to when you buy it -- because people use bongs for smoking tobacco and all :X i guess basically napster is only a means of illegality, but only if you use it that way. oooh, also, you can download programs like sub7, etc....but "arent allowed to use them." i guess its like that. hopefully that rambling made sense.. Posted by: kyle (your cousin!) on June 1, 2003 11:18 PMYour cousin comes close to getting at the better dilemna: Do people who favor lax restrictions on guns also favor lax restrictions on narcotics. Guns don't kill people, bad people kill others with guns. Drugs don't cause death and pain bad people who use drugs cause death and pain. And there you have a huge contradiction for republicans. Better yet do you now support no gun control? Posted by: dfc on June 2, 2003 04:42 AMSomething to keep in mind is that there is a big difference between regulation and a law ban. I think that regulation works very well with cars & alchohol - putting legal restrictions on their use to ensure public safety. Regulation could work well with cigarettes, some drugs and paraphenalia as well as firearms if we could all agree. Unfortunately as regulations are frequently based on a combination of social mores and statistical data, this is probably something best accomplished on a state or even local level. NJ for example has had more stringent gun and auto control laws than other states - probably good because of population density. Perhaps republicans haven't thought of this angle to their states rights platform... Posted by: Jason on June 2, 2003 12:33 PMPost a comment
