Protesting in Berlin

I went to the war protest in Berlin today. I guess it's safe to say that I've caved on the Iraq issue. While I agree that Saddam should go, I don't think dropping bombs, killing Iraqis, and sending GIs in to die is the way to bring it about. All that will succeed in doing is pissing off more of the ME countries, while leaving Iraq a more bomb-ruined country, probably complete with minefields. Sometimes comics say it best.

And besides, I think should we should focus such military strength on targets that actually have the potential to strike first. If America's real reason for removing Saddam is because of humans rights violations, it should say so clearly, and work with the UN for a more peaceful removal of him. If he really has weapons, well, let's see some proof already. The US has had plenty of time to show some evidence behind closed doors and allow the UN to slowly come around without tipping anyone off vis-a-vis spies in Iraq.

Ouch...

I have to say I took a minor offense to some signs. I think this thing isn't the US' fault. I guess America's democratic revolution has been hijacked. Too bad the conservatives are interested in bombing Iraq, but "don't want to talk about foreign policy." (warning: Clip from Bill O'Reilly of the O'Reilly factor which may raise your blood pressure enough to cause problems).

And more...

As we were leaving, we heard the official police estimate at 500,000 people. 100,000 were expected. Unbelievable. Even more people showed up in Rome (estimates at 2 MILLION!!!).

And, of course, we weren't allowed anywhere near the US embassy, not even to take pictures. This fear of terrorism is getting ridiculous...and it's making me more curious how my brother is making out in NYC. Rumor has it that there are sharpshooters there...

Things are a giant mess. Interest groups and lobbyists are in firm command of the country. Elected officials are just figureheads. This country has finally been bought and the final payment just came in. Maybe I should make like you and find grad school in some other country. Preferably one I know the language of.

It's interesting the ones who are protesting. Germany? Where were they in WW2?

Maybe if someone such as the US would have taken a more proactive stance towards Hitler earlier on.. maybe that would have saved the millions in the holocost.

Untill someone tells me a better way to deal with Iraq I'll continue to support our leadership.

Saddam was properly contained. Granted, we may not have had the HUMINT we wanted from inside the country; but, there was absolutely nothing he could do that we didn't know about. (We can go back to Reagan and Bush Sr for the lack of Iraqi Intel.) This concept of going to war over WMD was Bull$hit from the start and the Bushies know it. In his 'Meet the Press' interview Dubya all but REFUSED to testify @ the panel he was finally forced to create. Odd, we don't extend the same no WMD policy to North Korea, Pakistan, India, Libya, ETC ETC ETC. I am a firm believer in pre-emptive strikes but I am also a beliver in Teddy's Roosevelt's motto: Walk softly and carry a big stick. Most of the actions the Bushies wish to conduct can be done silently and swiftly by our men in the shadows. There is absolutely no reason for an "Axis of Evil" comment that throws more gasoline to those hell bent on destroying the US. We can take care of them just fine without political rhetoric.

Put your money and mouth on domestic issues, ones Americans care about & put your quiet heros against UBL, Saddamm and the rest.

Thanks for the opportunity to post.

Hey J -

Thanks for posting.

It's hard to say what would have happened. I guess part of me says that, if pre-WW2 intelligence was anything like it is now, maybe we would have and should have intervened in Germany. But again, if our intelligence were as good as it is now (satellites, planes, and spies), we probably would have recognized that Hitler was building an army and vehicles of war. I'm not too keen on World War 2 history (it's a pet fascination of mine, but one that I don't indulge in often). I would guess, though, that the US simply didn't know Hitler was preparing for an offensive.

All the intelligence in this new Iraq war shows that Hussein was contained -- he had no means to produce weapons, even if he wanted to.

The war is still a really divisive issue for me. On the one hand, it's great to see Iraq have a democracy; on the other, it's a shame to see so many people have to die for it. I only wish that I could live long enough to see what the history books will tell about this whole thing...

I wholeheartedly support our troops (my cousin is even a marine over there). I just think the war is stupid. What in my mind should I change?

I would like to inquire about using one of your images in a personal project. To whom do I direct my inquiry?

Thank you
Tina Hahn
